Tire Center Q&A At Mercedes-Benz of Denver

Your Questions About Tires... Answered

If you have ever gone into a skid or had to stop suddenly, you know how important your tires are.

Mercedes-Benz of Denver is not only the best location to buy and service your tires, we'd like to share some facts about your tires and how you can ensure they're operating at peak efficiency.

The Difference Between All-Season Tires and Snow Tires

The chief difference is right there in their names. All-season tires are designed to be used in any and all weather conditions, year round. Snow tires are designed specifically for snow and should only be on your vehicle in the winter.

To be more specific, snow tires have a different tread pattern. They have additional narrow grooves - a lot of them - that function as biting edges designed to improve the tire's grip in snow. These slits are called sipes and they help your vehicle maintain tread integrity for better control and lower noise levels.

While you can leave your all-season tires on all year, we recommend replacing them with snow tires for those months when Colorado gets its heaviest snowfalls. Driving in the mountains is challenging enough in the summer. You need all the help you can get in snow and ice.

Tire Rotation

Under normal driving conditions, it's recommended that you rotate your tires every 3,000 to 5,000 miles to maintain proper wear and tear. A good reminder is to have your tires rotated when you have the oil in your vehicle changed. However, if you use synthetic oil and drive longer between oil changes, then follow the 3,000- to 5,000-mile rule.

Replacing Tires

There is a simple trick you can use to see if your tires need to be replaced. Take an ordinary quarter and insert into several of the grooves on your tires with Washington's head pointing straight down. If you can see the top of Washington's head, it's time for new tires. If not, you still have at least 1/8 of an inch remaining.

In addition, you should check your tires at regular intervals for sidewall or other damage. Also check the pressure in your tires. This not only increases the life of your tires; properly inflated tires can actually improve your gas mileage as well.

Regular Tire Maintenance

Just like checking your oil and other fluid levels, make tire checks a regular part of maintenance routine. Using the quarter test, checking sidewalls and maintaining proper inflation can all contribute to you getting maximum mileage from your tires.
